As an author, being on the set of the Moxie movie was an incredibly surreal and wonderful experience. Walking onto the set for the first time and seeing everything that had been inside my head coming to life was absolutely remarkable. The set was situated in an old high school, complete with posters, lockers, and all the details that brought the Moxie universe to reality. It was truly wild to witness this transformation.
Additionally, the opportunity to meet Amy Poehler, the screenwriter Tamara Chestna, and some of the cast, as well as observe the filming process, was incredible. I was stunned by the immense work, time, effort, and people power required to make even a single scene work. My respect for filmmakers grew tremendously through this experience. Honestly, it was one of the best days of my life.
Another exciting aspect was the creation of Moxie zines for the characters to read and distribute, just like in the book. It was so much fun to read these zines and see them come to life. I even had a blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo as a chemistry teacher, which was an absolute delight, along with the experience of getting my makeup and hair done.
Having my book adapted by Netflix as an original film is practically impossible to put into words. Of course, the fact that an artist I truly admire, Amy Poehler, is adapting my novel is incredibly exciting. Seeing a world I created in my head come to life on the screen is super thrilling. But perhaps the most exhilarating part is knowing that the Moxie message of liberation and standing up for oneself in a world that tries to drown out girls' voices is being shared with a wider audience. I feel tremendously fortunate.
To me, being a Moxie girl is all about liberation and joy. The joy of being your true self and the joy that comes with liberating ourselves from the dumb rules that society has placed on us when it comes to how to behave, think, love, and dream. It's also about connecting with other girls who support and uplift one another. The Moxie message is one of empowerment, and I'm honored to be a part of sharing it with the world.
